The Messinian Bay Hotel is situated in the beautiful city of Kalamata, which is the second most populated city of Peloponnese, behind Patras. Kalamata is located 250 km away from Athens, 215 km from Patras and 715 km from Thessaloniki. According to a 2011 census, the municipality of Kalamata has 69.849 citizens, spreads over 158,63 square km and includes 13 municipal districts. The districts extend from the grassy plains on the west of the city to the hillsides of mount Taygetos and the eastern coasts.
Kalamata is a place with rich history as it first appeared in the Early Helladic period (2600-2300 BC). Throughout its history, it has been under the dominance of Spartans (8th- 4th c. BC), the Francs (1205 AC), the Venetians ( 1685- 1715 AC) and finally the Turks, until 1821 AC.
Kalamata is one of the most modernized cities of Greece. It distinguishes itself for its great town planning and its vigorous cultural and educational activities. The city has a state of the art hospital and a wide range of fully equipped athletic facilities, while it accommodates several departments of the Peloponnesian University, and the Technological Educational Institute of Kalamata.
Concerning the city name’s origin, there are four theories as where the name “Kalamata” came from. According to the first, the city was named after the reeds (known as “kalamia” in Greek) which grow on Nedon river near the city and more specifically from the word “kalåmata” the locals used to describe the reeds. The second theory supports that the city was named after a monastery dedicated to the Holy Mary of Kalomata (a theory which yet lacks documentation). The third theory speaks about a woman who had beautiful eyes (known as “kalomata” in Greek). The last theory claims that the name of the city comes from the local surname “Kalamatas”, a derivation from the Greek adjective “kalomatas”.
To sum up, Kalamata is a beautiful and charming city, full of mystery and tales of its past. It is also a place of peace and tranquility, which welcomes visitors to discover its hospitality.
